Seattle Press print edition bids farewell—for now
Sep 12, 2002 --
To Our Readers, From the Publisher
The Seattle Press has been a vital part of the Seattle community for about 25 years. It began as a local Fremont paper, and then expanded to become the North Seattle Press, then became The Seattle Press. Under that name, it has been published free to the community every other week for about five years.
I became involved with The Seattle Press last August. Since that time, we have investigated important community events like animal experimentation at the University of Washington, labor issues at the Pacific Science Center and pesticide spraying in the Crown Hill neighborhood. We have been pleased to note that stories "broken" by our reporters have later been covered by the Seattle Times and the Seattle Weekly, and picked up by newswires like AlterNet. Columns contributed by local writers on issues such as transportation and law and privacy have generated thoughtful discussion on our on-line forum and in our letters to the editor. The Seattle Press staff has been proud to provide such an important contribution to our community.
Unfortunately, a variety of circumstances may force us to take a hiatus from publication for a while. I am saddened by this turn of events, especially because of the positive feedback I have received from you, our readers. We intend to continue publication just as soon as circumstances permit (check our website www.seattlepress.com for updates). We have appreciated the loyalty of our readers and the businesses who have supported our endeavors through their advertisements.
We encourage you to stay informed, to keep up those lively discussions, and, most of all, to support your local, independently-owned media as well as the businesses whose ads keep local media alive.
David
UPDATE FEBRUARY 2007: After three years of silence we have concluded that the old SP organization is defunct, based on, among other things, lack of payment of agreed support fees. We have maintained the web site for the convenience of the public and will henceforth retain the archive and web site under our own name as seattlepressonline.com aka seattlepress.com, which domain we originally registered in 1998 on behalf of former publisher Benchmark Communications. The original publishers are responsible for the accuracy of reporting and for opinions published before November 1, 2003. Clark Internet Publishing Inc.

I'm really sorry to hear you're off the air for awhile. I always read the Press, especially the column by Jim Hightower and the privacy articles by Deborah Pierce, as well as the restaurant reviews by Zack Lyons. Good luck to you all, come back soon! |

I took pictures for the Fremont Forum and the North Seattle Press in the 1980's. Clayton Park, a fellow SPU alumnus, was editor then. I was at the brainstorming session with Roger Pence and Terry Denton when we were trying to come up with a name for the paper after Pence and Denton took it over from the Fremont organization that had published the Forum. I swear the "Press" name was my idea. Visiting Seattle every once in a while since then, I was glad to see the Press still around. Do try to keep doing earnest community reporting, whether you call it the Seattle Press or not. |
