Traffic Circle Contest

May 16, 2002 -- Love them or hate them, traffic circles are everywhere in Seattle. Some are lifeless rounds of asphalt, harsh and punishing to the eye. Others, adopted by loving neighbors, are masterpieces of small-scale landscaping: beautiful plants, shade trees, and year-round flowers and shrubs decorate the best.

SeaTrans is recognizing the hard work of all those caring neighbors with the first-ever Seattle Traffic Circle Garden Contest. The competition is open not just to circles, but also to curb bulbs, triangles, medians or chicanes; there are seven categories. Neighborhood "clusters" of circles can be nominated, as well as standout individuals. The contest is being co-sponsored by the Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Tilth and Northwest Garden News.

Entries will be accepted until June 30; judging will take place over the summer and awards will be presented in September. For more information on how to nominate your personal favorite circles, contact Liz Ellis at 684-5008 or visit www.cityofseattle.net/td/trafcirc.asp.

If you don't have a traffic circle on your street and you want one, contact SeaTrans. If you would like to beautify your existing circle, you can get a grant of up to $500 to pay for plant replacement, soil or compost, and dump runs. Apply by calling 684-0464 or visiting http://cityofseattle.net/don/nmf/sasforms.htm.
