University District Walking Tour

May 09, 2002 -- Take the tour! The University District's public art and cultural self-guided audio tour, that is. The new neighborhood attraction is a complement to the Public Art and Culture Walking Tour Map developed by the Seattle Arts Commission, and both are available for free checkout. The kit includes the audio tour CD, a portable CD player, a copy of the walking tour map and a pouch.

The University District Arts and Heritage Committee and Jack Straw Productions teamed up to produce the CD, which features historians, architects and artists sharing their knowledge of the area's rich history. Interviewees included sculptor Gerard Tsutakawa, longtime community activist Patty Whisler, actor and Associate Professor at the UW School of Drama Mark Jenkins, College Inn owner Ron Bozarth, architect Roger Wagoner and others. They describe social events, fashions, and political movements from the mid-1800s to the present. The tour map covers the neighborhood from 7th Avenue to Montlake Boulevard and from North Lake Union to NE Ravenna Boulevard.

The tour kit can be checked out at Jack Straw Productions, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE (634-0919), University Neighborhood Service Center, 4534 University Way NE (684-7542), UW Visitor Information Center, 4014 University Way NE (543-0198) or the University District Public Library, 5009 Roosevelt Way NE (684-4063).
