Kids' Bike Swap May 12
May 03, 2001 --
Bike Works presents their popular Kids' Bike Swap on Saturday, May 12, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Genesee Playfield in Rainier Valley. Bring your kids and their outgrown bikes for a fun day at the park, swapping smaller bikes for bigger ones. The playfield is located at 43rd Avenue S and S Genesee Street off Rainier Avenue S.
This will be Bike Works' fifth annual bike swap, and there'll be lots of kids' bikes to choose from. Bike Works is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing affordable bike services in the community, including the Community Bicycle Shop, Neighborhood Rides and the Earn-a-Bike program, which allows youths ages 9 to 17 to learn hands-on bicycle repair. Once trained, kids can earn a bike of their own by repairing used bikes for others, accumulating Earn-a-Bike hours in the Community Bike Shop. Adult mentors provide guidance and friendship, and to date 275 kids have participated in the program. (Bike repair classes are also available for adults.)
After the Kids' Bike Swap, the Summer Cycle Challenge Bike-a-thon is the next event on Bike Works' schedule, set for June 9 at Seward Park. Bike Works HQ is located at 3709 S. Ferdinand St. in Columbia City, For more info, call 206-725-9408 or see www.scn.org/bikeworks.
