Mar 22, 2001 -- Breakfast in Wallingford

Julia's of Wallingford has long been synonymous with breakfast. Indeed, Julia's breakfast menu is its most diverse menu, featuring a wide array of eggs, omelettes, hotcakes, scrambles, Ranchero breakfasts, hot and cold cereals, and a variety of special dishes. Bring your appetite--you won't go away hungry!

On our visit we went for the Black Bean Breakfast Burrito, off of the Ranchero menu, and a Create-Your-Own Omelette--in this case, bacon, avocado and cheddar. Both were tasty and satisfying. We especially enjoyed Julia's grilled spuds. And the fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice rocked! (Apparently, 'tis the season for fresh citrus.)

Breakfast is served most of the day, but their grilled bread dishes stop at 11 a.m. on weekdays. Julia's also has an extensive lunch and dinner menu.

Lunch in Greenwood

Happy Greek Independence Day! One hundred and eighty years ago this March 25 was the big day, and I celebrated with a terrific lunch at one of my personal neighborhood haunts, Georgia's Greek Restaurant & Deli. Georgia's is one of those special little family-owned neighborhood joints with staying power.

Georgia's makes great home-cooked Greek food, plain and simple. When you eat there, you feel like you've been adopted into a Greek family--your new grandmother seats you at the kitchen table and feeds you until she is satisfied. I often go for the Avgolemono Soup, a lemon, rice and chicken concoction that's always fresh-made--it's bound to become your new favorite comfort food. The Greeks are supposed to know what to do with lamb, and Georgia's proves it, even in simple lunch dishes like their Roast Leg of Lamb Pita Sandwich. Oh, mama!

In addition to a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, Georgia's has a fine deli, where I pick up imported sheep's milk feta and kassari cheese, as well as tasty Greek desserts. Georgia's also offers live music on weekends.

Dinner in the Central District

Some of the best soul food I have found in Seattle is at the intersection of 23rd Avenue and East Union Street, in the heart of the Central District. Thompson's Point of View is nothing short of fantastic. We were smart enough to go with a group, so that we could try a lot of dishes. We started off with the Hallelujah Chicken Wings--the name is justified. We went on to enjoy succulent pork chops, baked chicken and ox tails, with traditional Southern sides like mac 'n' cheese, candied yams, collard greens and cornbread.

It was all incredible. We've been talking about it ever since. And we can't wait to go back, as Louise Thompson insists that we have to try her catfish, for which she's won a pile of awards. If she can make baked chicken taste so good it causes the entire table to pause and give thanks, I bet she cooks up a mean catfish. Ms. Thompson hails from southern Mississippi, a place where folks know how to eat. So if you like your soul food, head on down to Thompson's--and you can take in some excellent jazz and soul music while you're there!
