Dec 15, 1999 -- Breakfast in Fremont

Breakfast at Bagel Oasis, 462 N 36th St, is for those who want to spend a quiet half-hour with a cup of coffee, the morning paper and food that is plain good to eat. Bagel Oasis is an informal breakfast and lunch bagel joint at the western edge of the Fremont business district. You'll find six omelettes on the breakfast menu, served with a buttered bagel. Try the Farmer's Market: green peppers, potatoes, onions and cheddar cheese. Or just chew on a bagel with cream cheese. Or grab a dozen, fresh bagels and a tub of scallion cream cheese to share with co-workers back at the office. And Bagel Oasis has an amenity unheard of in Fremont: parking on the side.

Open from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Lunch in Greenwood

Delicious split pea soup with chicken, wonderful sweet potato fries and fresh carrot juice make for a hearty lunch on a cold, rainy day. The Stalk Exchange, a new restaurant and deli at 6711 Greenwood Avenue N, is in a blue house (with a big deck out in front for warm summer days) across the street and up a bit from the Phinney Neighborhood Center. All the food served is organic. The shelves are stacked with luscious looking loaves of bread baked in a wood-fired brick oven out in back of the house. They serve fresh pastries every morning and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. After scanning the intriguing dinner menu, which changes according to the season, we know we will pay another visit soon.

Open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for breakfast and lunch, Wednesday through Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. for dinner.

Dinner in Crown Hill

Good cooks who work at other restaurants take their best friends to Burrito Loco, 9211 Holman Road NW. This is authentic, and authentically delicious, Mexican food. Several of our friends swear Burrito Loco's mole sauce is the best they've ever had. It's the little things that matter most where food is concerned, and the beans here are always the best-tasting, topped but not drowned with quesa fresca cheese. The exterior of this restaurant is unassuming, and so are the menu prices (few items are more than $10). But the flavors are rich and well-balanced, consistently well-prepared. Watch people eating at Dick's Drive-In across the street while you feast on far superior fare.

Open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Alas, Bagel Oasis is no more, though their bagels are supposed to live on in the deli that now resides at the same address...
