Protecting home education from sex offender housing

Feb 04, 2003 --

SENATOR TRACEY Eide is helping those parents currently home schooling their children by proposing a bill to protect the safety of these children from sex offenders who will be attempting housing nearby.

Why should this bill even be at debate? Currently, public schools and private schools alike are protected from sex offender housing. Home educators are either associated with public schools (through AEP’s or Charter Schools) or are even considered a private school by default. So what’s the problem?

What’s good for education facilities is good for all education facilities and the bill Senator Eide proposes is in keeping with propriety and equal rights. While privacy issues for home educators is somewhat blurred in Senator Eide’s bill, her willingness to address what other senators have not is a show of honor on her part. I congratulate Senator Eide for her determination to protect the rights of private law abiding citizens as they home educate.
